Greenie’s Big Catch!

Recently we were watching this green heron working the edge of the salt marsh among the oyster beds. The greenie was intently yet patiently staring into the water in hopes a fish would swim nearby.
His diligence was rewarded as the bird plucked it’s evening meal out of the water. The green heron had to be happy with this catch as we so often see them snatch up only tiny minnows which require much more work for less payoff.

    • Thanks much for looking and commenting!
Yes I have seen a greenie using ‘bait’ to fish. I have some photos somewhere of one catching a bug and then dropping it into the water to lure a fish.
Actually a week or so ago I posted a series of a green heron catching and eating shrimp. It was also picking up, and then dropping back, small shrimp which at first I couldn’t figure out. But then I realized that it was dropping the tiny shrimp into the water trying to lure in larger fish. Smart bird.

      • WOW… VERY nice! I’ve always missed… I have to check out your blog more thoroughly. I’ve only seen them fishing with the bait… Not actually using it. Crazily intelligent little birds!
