Early Evening Flight
I stopped by briefly at the salt marsh late this afternoon to see if anybody was out and about. Just as I approached this great blue heron it must have decided it didn’t like my looks, so it took off across the marsh reeds. I grabbed a couple shots as it it zipped by…and that turned out to be the only action I would see today!

I can’t believe it wouldn’t like your looks! It was just trying to give a nice photo fly by.

Believe it or not, I suspect there are times when me getting good photos is not their main concern in life. Naturally it should be, but it turns out they can be a bit self absorbed and inconsiderate. I try to talk to them and explain the situation but they rarely listen.

As usual, great shots! He really looks intent on “getting out of dodge”. That requires me to pause for reflection (easily bored followers can skip to the next message now). Isn’t it kinda depressing that this same bird has no problem calmly fishing for a snack as an alligator glides by – but hits the throttle and scoots at the mere sight of a human? Creatures of nature seem to know where the real danger lies, I guess. Herons and egrets have been running away from me all week – I have lots of butt shots, but no good facials.

No that you mention it, that is a good point. Alligators?! Sure, they are fine, bring them around, all you want.
But me?!? Oh no, big stupid photographer, we can’t have him around making us nervous.
Actually though many of our local birds do let me get very close, but in general they are likely smarter to spend more time around gators and less around humans. They know who is really dangerous.

These ae some very nice pics. Nothing to sneeze at. All nature photographers should be so lucky and as good handing a camera as you. These two pics should fill anyone’s day for bird photos.

It sure seems to me you don’t have a whole lot of room to complain. I wish my guys would let me get close enough to fill the frame as nicely as yours do/did. That’s a gorgeous flight shot! Besides, I think they look far more impressive in flight anyway.

I guess I’m kind of used to them mostly ignoring me, so when one checks me out and decides to leave I take it all personal. 😀
Thanks much Gunta, I glad you liked these GBH flight shots!

I wish I had a marsh near me so that I can stop and visit at a moments notice. Although I do forget I have a nice little river right at my doorstep. But it doesn’t have nearly the wildlife like you do.

The marsh area can be fun, but even still, you never know. Some days all kinds of stuff is busting out all over and other days I just end up sitting there. But it’s always nice to be out.

I see these every now and then while I’m hiking but never have been able to get this close. I must look ridiculous trying to sneak up on them. These photos are gorgeous.

It’s funny, some of the ones around here are fairly used to people and vehicles and pretty much ignore me.
Others are skittish and take off immediately. Guess those are the new guys that have not gotten to know me yet. 🙂
