Lost In Thought

This past weekend we saw an egret come in for a landing in an area already occupied by a wood stork. But as you can see, Woody didn’t mind the new arrival at all. In fact, he barely flinched as the egret came swooping in…he seemed to have something important on his mind!

  13. Wonderful series of shots. In addition to the behavior of the wood stork, I was really struck by the detail that you captured for both of the white birds. I personally find it a real challenge not to blow out the whites when I am photographing egrets. Is there a secret (beyond choosing the right exposure)?)

    • Thanks very much for looking Mike and I really appreciate your kind comments.
      White birds can indeed be tough to photograph. I shoot white birds in Manual exposure mode exclusively and I expose to hopefully maintain detail in the white feathers which sometimes requires letting the background go dark.
      I have found that using any auto exposure mode will almost always blow out the white even when using exposure comp. Hope this helps.

      • Ah, ha! Mike’s question and your response just helped to explain some problems I’ve been having – not only with white birds, but also with bright sunlight and shadow shots. I’ve been strictly an auto exposure photographer, but as my subjects become more varied, the results have become less satisfactory. It’s probably really, REALLY time for me to gain a little knowledge. 😉

  15. That’s funny that egret seems to really be kicking up some dirt. Woody the wood stork doesn’t really seem to be fussed much. Nice series in showing this behavior. I wonder if the egret was trying to get the wood stork to move?

    • I don’t think the egret cared that Woody was standing there and I don’t Woody cared that the egret was landing next to him. I guess they were both just going about thier day in their own way.

  23. More thrilling shots! I wasn’t going to comment on each post as I caught up – you’ve got enough work to do taking pictures and posting them so we can gaze in wonder at these extraordinary creatures – but I just have to because I am still marvelling at the construction/engineering of that bird’s wings, and the little flap on the upper side – sigh … 🙂
