“Gotcha!!”
Here’s an anhinga fishing shot from the files…
The anhinga is a water bird that fishes by swimming underwater and spearing a fish on the end of it’s sharp bill. Here, the excited bird bursts up out of the marsh pond with a freshly speared meal. Anhingas are one of my favorite birds to watch and photographing them is a challenge which I greatly enjoy.

Great shot, Phil. Why don’t my photos look like this? 😀
Thanks very much Sylvia, so glad you enjoyed this pic!
Come up for a visit sometime and bring your camera. I can guarantee I will supply some inaccurate photo tips and advice that will have you taking even worse pictures in no time. 🙂 😀
Thanks for the offer, Phil. It’s very tempting. 🙂 btw, What exactly do you mean by “even worse pictures?” 😆
Well, I, um, you know,I only meant that, um, you’re pictures would, ah, not get better, eh, not that they are bad or anything like that, no not at all, I was just um, saying I would not be much help, not that you need it of course.
So…that’s eh, I guess, pretty much that. I guess. Ah…you know what I mean. heh 😳 😉 😀
Bwahahahaha. I know what you meant, Phil. I’m just enjoying teasing you. 😆
Well you are now an official member of that club along with my wife and a few of my smart aleck friends. 😀 😆
I’ll be sure to wear my camo pants when I come for the first meeting of this exclusive club. 😀
Oh absolutely! Camo pants will be de rigueur at all club meetings.
Another great shot Phil!! When did you take this? A friend of mine from PA and I were at Huntington yesterday around 1100 and stayed for a couple of hours. I was really hoping I would run in to you and Alyce there. We spent time on the beach and the Nature Center. I was really surprised to see that Atalya is now charging to get in!!
Chat soon!!
Connie
Hi Connie, glad you liked this anhinga pic! We were there yesterday about 4pm but only stayed briefly.
See ya!
That’s a nice looking lunch! Great shot.
Thanks for checking out this shot! Those birds are real experts and have the spear fishing technique down perfectly!
Amazing to watch,
Great shot Phil.
Thanks a lot Jan.
Great shot (as usual). We don’t see many anhingas here. Far more cormorants, or could it be I’m not looking closely enough? So far all the close-up shots I’ve managed are all definitely cormorants.
Thanks I’m glad you liked the anhinga. Cormorants and anhingas are both water birds but have slightly different fishing techniques. The cormorant with it’s hooked bill will grasp a fish while the anhinga with it’s pointed bill will spear the fish. Both are interesting to watch and photograph. 🙂
Fantastic shot! This bird looks almost as happy as you!
Thanks Molly, yes it’s a toss up who is more happy in this scenario!
Sempre stupendi i tuoi scatti, wowww
Ciao, Pat
Thank you so much Pat!

Thanks very much, I’m happy you enjoyed this photo!
Truly awesome shot 😀 I love action shots.. it tells a story!
Well thanks very much I appreciate you looking and commenting!
Stunning detail on the feathers, Phil!
Thanks for checking out the anhinga pic!
Magnificent. What a feat of nature, and a truly perfect capture – full of thrust and drag, the feathers and body working together to propel the body into the air. I so enjoyed the detail – the pattern on the feathers of the leading edge of the wing, looking almost like fish scales, finished off in long luxurious feathers – the muscles in its legs and rump, but it’s the flying feathers – reaching skyward … they could belong to an angel. 🙂
Well I am so happy you enjoyed this photo and I greatly appreciate your very kind comments! Thanks much!
