Woody Catches Two…Looses One…
Earlier this weekend I was watching this wood stork fishing in the salt marsh. At one point woody came up with two fish on one attempt. But astonishingly, one of the fish manages to twist and wriggle it’s way out of woody’s prodigious bill and plummet back into the water…perhaps to live to swim another day. Or maybe woody just snatched it back up again later. Either way. 🙂
KLASSE FARBE(n)…und der KRANICH ist das überhaupt ein KRANICH den FISCH aschmecken???
Danke für das Betrachten der Fotos von diesem Storch 🙂
lach also doch ein STORCH……**FG**
Makes me smile. 🙂
I’m happy to hear that Deb! 🙂
The stork looks as if he already has some battles behind on this day. 😛
He might be just a little rough to look at up close. 🙂
Fantastic shots.
Glad you liked them, thanks.
Nice series, Phil.
Thanks for checking them out Steve.
A fish in the craw is worth two in the beak…. or something like that? This is another one of your critters that has a bit of a prehistoric look to it…. something about that leathery looking head.
They absolutely do have a prehistoric look to them and these storks almost look like living dinosaurs.
🙂 Awesome series!
Thanks very much Amy!
Looks like a team effort. The flopping of one got enough space for the other to slide away.
Well that would be the epitome of taking one for the team.
At least it didn’t turn out to be double or nothing for Woody! The small, silver fish make me laugh. I was working on a swim platform this week – teak grating. Every time I made a quick move, glass minnows would jump and come up through the holes in the grate. I could have used Woody to help me clean those things up every time it happened. He would have thought he was at a buffet!
Woody would have loved that situation for sure!
I saw this stork catch more fish in one evening then I see a flock of them catch all together, he was doing quite well for himself. 🙂
What a great set of photos! He sure does know how to fish!
Thanks Molly! I never saw one wood stork catch so much fish as this guy was getting.
Awesome shots Phil.
Thanks Jan glad you liked them.
Thank you for your visiting on my blog. You have very nice photos and you are very bold photografer 🙂
Well it’s my pleasure and I appreciate your kind words about my photos! 🙂
A very handsome bird in a wood-storkish sort of way.
Well…I suppose handsome might be one description, but up close they do kind of have a face only a mother could love.
Sereno inizio di settimana.
Un sorriso,
Luciana
Sono felice di questo ti ha dato un divertente inizio di settimana.
Hi Phil-
Thanks for the great pictures of the woodstorks. They are so interesting looking. I watch them at HBSP and notice they don’t make any sounds when they are in a group, just the sounds of their bills touching each other. I refer many people to your site!
I just checked Cornell U. All about birds and Woodstorks do have LOUD voices. Must be every time I see them they are just being quiet! lol
I don’t hear much sound from them generally other then the bill sword fights. 🙂
They do often make quite a racket when they are smacking those huge bills at each other. Sounds like two wood boards hitting together.
Excellent shots!!!!
Thanks very much!
Hello Phil,
that’s life and we can say “take it easy…” one fish is better than no fish! 😉
Excellent photo series!
Have a nice day
moni
Oh one fish is definitely better then zero fish!
Thanks moni so glad you liked these photos!
Catching skills- A+. Juggling skills- B. 🙂 Hey, he still got to eat. 😉
That assessment sounds quite accurate and yes he should be happy he got something. Although…who knows, he might have re-caught that same fish later. 😯 🙂
I suppose one is better than none but dang it on dropping the second!
One is better then none but I suspect our poor fishy friend had a short lived freedom from that VERY hungry wood stork! Yikes!
Awesome shot!
Thanks for checking these out!
Wow, that is one amazing looking bird – a face that perhaps only a mother could love! Gorgeous images.
Oh it really is only a face a mother could love. They are rough looking up close but quite elegant flyers.
Thanks!
One for the fish this time I think
Maybe…but Woody also may have re-caught that same fish too. 😯
Couldn’t help but think, “Hooray for the fish!”.
