“Here Comes My Friend!”

Yesterday afternoon there was one lone spoonbill fishing in the salt marsh during low tide. He was not alone the entire time, there were several white ibis, snowy and great egrets, and great blue herons around to play with, but no other spoonbills…

Then finally after about 2 hours another spoonbill showed up, gliding low over the oyster beds and landing near his pal. I thought the first spoonie would act little more excited to see his friend arrive, but I’m sure he was happy to see a familiar pink face! 🙂

    • Thanks glad you liked these photos, and great question about our old pal Mr. Grumpy. I have not seen him in over two weeks now so I figure he has left us for the season. I’ll be looking for him to return in July 2014. 🙂

  1. Do you think these guys are from further north, Phil, or the are they the last of your spoonies from this summer? I was wondering whether we’d seen the last of them for this year and was delighted when I saw pink this morning! 🙂

    • I reckon these are the few final holdouts for us this season. They will likely move on any day now but it’s a lot better then last year when I didn’t see a single spoonbill past Sept. 1. We are on bonus time for sure now and I’m thrilled about it. Saw two today. 😀

  2. So nice they are still there! Amazing feet, as they stretch toward the landing. Great that you guys can capture these – nice memories of perhaps a later spoonie season.

    • I think the first spoonie may have been a bit miffed that his friend took so long to show up. He waited well over two hours. Well…he wasn’t waiting that whole time, he was eating! 😀
Thanks very much Sylvia, I’m glad you enjoyed these!

  3. I think that the second spoonbill was responsible for scoring the landing–it looks to me like the spoonbill stuck the landing. Judges are told to remain impassive and not show favoritism. 🙂

  4. The color of the wings in the light is just fabulous! Shouldn’t they be heading south? And hey, maybe his friend was really his/her stalker. Therefore, he didn’t get “away” again….. lol.

    • I expect they will be moving south any day now, that’s a big reason why I try to get out there as often as possible when some are around. I saw two today but they didn’t come over for photos. 😦 Oh well, it’s been a great summer!

        • I did see two last night so I know we have the pair still here. The record for latest sighting here is is Nov. 29. Wonder how close these two will get to that?
I’ll be envious of those who get to see the spoonies during the winter while I will have to wait until next June.
