“Here Comes My Friend!”
Yesterday afternoon there was one lone spoonbill fishing in the salt marsh during low tide. He was not alone the entire time, there were several white ibis, snowy and great egrets, and great blue herons around to play with, but no other spoonbills…
Then finally after about 2 hours another spoonbill showed up, gliding low over the oyster beds and landing near his pal. I thought the first spoonie would act little more excited to see his friend arrive, but I’m sure he was happy to see a familiar pink face! 🙂
Attimo dopo attimo l’atterraggio 😀
Fantastiche!!!
E stato un bel atterraggio! grazie Pat
Looks like the second spoonie is landing with a smile. You know these birds are my fave – love the pics!
They could be gone any day now so I’m still jumping on any chance I get to see them. Last year I never saw a single one past Sept. 1st so we are in bonus time for sure right now! Glad you like the pink goofballs.
I don’t like. I love! 🙂
I’m rather partial to them myself.
Excellent photos as always! ☺ But where is Mr Grumpy these days?…I hope he’s ok… 😉
Thanks glad you liked these photos, and great question about our old pal Mr. Grumpy. I have not seen him in over two weeks now so I figure he has left us for the season. I’ll be looking for him to return in July 2014. 🙂
Do you think these guys are from further north, Phil, or the are they the last of your spoonies from this summer? I was wondering whether we’d seen the last of them for this year and was delighted when I saw pink this morning! 🙂
I reckon these are the few final holdouts for us this season. They will likely move on any day now but it’s a lot better then last year when I didn’t see a single spoonbill past Sept. 1. We are on bonus time for sure now and I’m thrilled about it. Saw two today. 😀
Guess they’ve spent a happy summer in your neck of the woods – hope that means you’re in for even more pink invaders next year because I’ve sure loved seeing them too! 🙂
So nice they are still there! Amazing feet, as they stretch toward the landing. Great that you guys can capture these – nice memories of perhaps a later spoonie season.
We are so thrilled some are still here but I expect them to move on any day now. But it’s been a super summer I never saw so many, so often before. 🙂
Great landing sequence, but the first spoonie does look a bit blasé.
I think he may have been a bit miffed that it took so long for his friend to show up. He waited well over two hours.
Lovely Phil!
Thank you so much Sally!
Beautiful Phil. Love his approach.
Thanks very much and they really do that approach with style don’t they?!
Great photos, Phil. I wonder why he didn’t receive a more enthusiastic welcome. 😕 Your pics really made me smile. 🙂
I think the first spoonie may have been a bit miffed that his friend took so long to show up. He waited well over two hours. Well…he wasn’t waiting that whole time, he was eating! 😀
Thanks very much Sylvia, I’m glad you enjoyed these!
Very nice shots Phil. Thanks! It’s good to know two spoonbills are still at Huntington.
Thanks Lee, we still have three which is great. None stayed past the first week in Sept. last year. We had a great summer with them this time!
They have such character and personality and you capture it so well.
Yes they do Charlie and that’s a big reason I keep going out there to see them every chance I get and can’t help but take more photos! 🙂
More beautiful pink birds!
Pink birds! You gotta love ’em right?! 😀
Completely unconcerned, isn’t he? Such great detail, Phil – and those colours! Ideal background for them!
Thanks very much Maggie! These guys make it easy for me sometimes…they are just so darn cute! 🙂
I think that the second spoonbill was responsible for scoring the landing–it looks to me like the spoonbill stuck the landing. Judges are told to remain impassive and not show favoritism. 🙂
That could definitely be it! The judge can’t show favoritism. He has to act the same whether it’s his friend landing or any heron or egret. 🙂
I love seeing mud on his foot :D, and look at him making a shade for his head with his wings 😀
I only have a few rare photos of them with clean feet Paula. 😀 They really are cute aren’t they?
The color of the wings in the light is just fabulous! Shouldn’t they be heading south? And hey, maybe his friend was really his/her stalker. Therefore, he didn’t get “away” again….. lol.
I expect they will be moving south any day now, that’s a big reason why I try to get out there as often as possible when some are around. I saw two today but they didn’t come over for photos. 😦 Oh well, it’s been a great summer!
I bet! I know you will miss them. My sister is looking forward to the birds nesting on Galveston Island this winter. And I know the spoonbills will show up for her.
I did see two last night so I know we have the pair still here. The record for latest sighting here is is Nov. 29. Wonder how close these two will get to that?
I’ll be envious of those who get to see the spoonies during the winter while I will have to wait until next June.
No doubt that he was glad on the known Face! 😛 Great Shots, Phil!
I think he was happy to see his friend but it took too long so he was not happy about that. 🙂
