Cormorant-1 Pelican-0
We were over at the salt marsh this afternoon and there wasn’t a lot of activity, but there was some. At one point a cormorant caught himself a good size fish, which is somewhat unusual, they tend to come up with shrimp, eels, and small fish.
The cormorant’s huge prize was instantly noticed by a brown pelican fishing nearby who dove over in a frenzied attempt to purloin the fish. The pelican was denied however, as the cormorant wasted no time in swallowing the fish which resulted in one sadly disappointed pelican.

Wow! That is a big fish. What a great shot!

Thanks, glad you liked the cormorant. At the moment of this event, I was watching a blue heron who couldn’t catch a fish to save his life, then this happened. I’m glad I got something but it happened so fast I was close to striking out.

It always amazes me to see what birds can accomplish when they snag large prey! Even the occasional gull will pick up a mullet, and there goes the next hour while it fights off competitors and tries to get it down!

What’s funny (well to me, not the bird) is to see a blue heron catch a whopper which often attracts a crowd which may include an eagle. Those bald eagles are pirates who are more then happy to take advantage of another bird’s work.

Just shows what a cormorant can achieve in an emergency!

I was shocked the cormorant was able to keep that fish, but I suppose I shouldn’t be, they are well known fast gulpers.
