Get Off My Grass!!!
On Wednesday we were watching a great blue heron fishing in a small pool that had formed in the salt marsh during low tide. The heron wasn’t having much luck, so he may have been in a crabby mood! That was confirmed when a cormorant came flying in to the same pool and the heron went totally bonkers and pitched a huge fit. He came rushing over and not politely, explained to the cormorant that it was not welcome and needed to immediately leave the premises. The cormorant understood and very quickly complied and left the area. Soon after, the heron did end up catching a fish so I’m sure he felt the harsh ejection of the cormorant was justified!

What great action shots! I can’t remember seeing a Great Blue go after another bird like that, although I’ve seen them squabble with their own species.

I agree, the blue herons don’t often engage with other species (well except for maybe the snowys) but they do end up battling each other. Today I saw a real beauty of a total knock down, drag out between two great blues. I’ll post those pics soon.

Oh totally! That blue heron was really frustrated because the fishing was lousy and he was probably getting very hungry. That would account for the bad mood.

A wise move on the cormorant’s part! That heron meant business. Happy Easter to you and Alyce, Phil, from Lucy and me. Maggie

That cormorant didn’t have much of a choice once the cranky great blue started in! Hope you folks enjoyed your Easter as well.
