I previously worked as a news and sports photographer. Recently I have been enjoying wildlife photography. My approach toward bird photos is similar to sports photography. I attempt to capture mostly action and hopefully a unique perspective.
That is a huge butterfly ray!
Yes it was a good size one Mandy and the first time I ever saw an alligator with a catch like this!
Is it a sign of ecological pressure on alligators? less abundance of other fishes in coastal waters?
It may be to a certain extent. This alligator was in salt water which is not uncommon. They won’t live in the salt water but will visit especially if they hope to find some of their favorite foods such as blue crab. This situation was likely as a result of an opportunity that simply presented itself. Of course a catch such as this presents it’s own problems. Once a catch is made, it’s difficult to keep it away from other alligators that will want their share of the prize. Stashing the prize is a fine idea but it won’t stay hidden for long.
