Swamp Babies
Yesterday afternoon, despite it being a kind of dark and dreary day, we went over to the swamp to see if anybody might be hanging around. We quickly spotted this baby alligator lounging on a mud bog near the edge of the swamp. The camera angle may be deceiving and make it look bigger, but this little guy was barely two feet long. If you notice the pretty yellow flowers near his head you can get some idea of how small he is. A bit further out in the swamp we saw another young gator come slowly gliding by. This one was a four footer and one we still consider being in the “baby” catagory!

Clearly Phil, you and I have different definitions for the word “baby”! Baby for me conjures up small & cuddly and for you, green & scaly!

I’m happy to hear that I find them to be fascinating as well.
As long as he manages to stay clear of the big guys, which will be his main problem for the next several years, he can get 8 to 10 feet.

I just love the way they smile. 🙂 Happy babies are my best, even if they have lots of teeth and a bad attack of skin scales. Would it be quite safe to cuddle the two footer? 😀

Bright sun resulting in severe upper, back lighting. Not good. Sometimes I think I’m better off with overcast skies.

Good thing you explained the size because it sure looks bigger. I’m surprised you haven’t been able to teach them not to eat the babies.
It does look bigger and I knew that, so I tried to explain how big it was, or wasn’t.
I try to teach them things but do they pay attention to me? They do not. 😦
I love the colors on their body when they’re younger. And sinking down to just show their head..priceless!
Yeah that’s one thing I really like about the youngsters too, that stripey look they often have. 🙂

Yeah they are great. If this little guy pays attention and is careful, perhaps one day he will be the head swamp gator chasing around the youngsters. 😀
Great photos of the babies! I imagine you need to be very careful about where you walk. I wouldn’t even want to encounter a baby alligator myself. Scary.
