Two For One
Yesterday morning this osprey got two fish on one dive into the water. One fish for each talon!
I previously worked as a news and sports photographer. Recently I have been enjoying wildlife photography. My approach toward bird photos is similar to sports photography. I attempt to capture mostly action and hopefully a unique perspective.

Terrible timing for the fish. I can just imagine one saying to the other as they are being carried off…
“see what you got me into?!”

It’s a hard pond out there for the fish. 😯

It’s the ones that swim up close to the water’s surface that are most in jeopardy. But then the pond is kind of shallow so not a lot of help there.

So, most of them end up in someone’s beak at one point in time …

It often seems that the whole purpose fish exist is to be food for someone or something.

of course, they are at the end of the food chain – at least they have some purpose in life

Well I greatly appreciate your very kind comments and I’m thrilled you enjoyed these osprey photos!
Um, I guess my photos from this morning of a clapper rail bathing just might not cut it. 😉 😀

Now that’s amazing talent….(both you and the osprey).
Two fish at once is a marvelous example of successful multi-tasking!

That osprey sure knew what he was doing out there. Often I see them strike the water multiple times and come up with nothing. This show off gets two, and not an eagle in sight to steal his catches. 🙂

Holy photo, Phil! Amazing shot! This bird should be featured in a Doublemint commercial.

Hey thanks! And also great to hear a cool Doublemint reference! Great idea!

If we hit it big be on the lookout for the stretch limo bringing balloons up to your door. It won’t be PCH it will be my ‘people’. I’ll also be sure they bring one of those huge oversized checks for you.

Um please! I’ve always wanted a gigantic check!!! Can I also please request a mini check for the great fur ball so I don’t have to hear him complain about being left out? Thanks!

Got it. One HUGE check, one mini check (catnip scented of course)

That’s what I call efficient. Hope the eagle didn’t snatch one or both of them.

We were talking this morning and speculating that maybe the osprey figures if he catches two fish and gets jumped by the eagle, he can distract the eagle by dropping one as a counter measure and still have one for himself.

Wow, what a catch! You guys are so lucky to capture these moments – and even if they weren’t captured, to see them in person. I’ve often wondered where the osprey carries it’s meal to eat — a nest?

You are right about being privileged to occasionally be able to witness, if even not be able to photograph much of nature. Many times I have witnessed amazing aerial combat by a bald eagle (or two) jumping an osprey for it’s fish but they are maybe to high up or far off for photos. But that’s OK, I’m thrilled just to be there and see it.
Sometimes the osprey might carry a fish back to a nest but this time of year they are likely to carry it over to a tree to eat and enjoy.

First time I ever got a shot of an osprey twofer. I have GBHs with two fish but not an osprey. But I bet this bird has done this before.

Terrific shots! We’ll never know if the osprey planned to snag two at once, or if that was just exceptional luck…

Yeah I know I was thinking that exact same thing. I also wonder if he spotted two fish swimming side by side and went for the double grab or if it just happened that way. Fun for us to see either way. Thanks for looking Lee!

Great Capture. I wonder if he did that on purpose, or if it was pure luck?

Thanks Jeff, and yeah I also wonder if he spotted two fish swimming side by side and went for the double grab or if it just happened that way. We will never know but something tell me it’s not this osprey’s first time at this.

It happens occasionally Deb, but it can’t be too often. Still not sure if it’s done purposely or not, but I suspect this bird knew exactly what it was doing.
