Water Skiing In The Afternoon
Earlier this week we had just this one white pelican show up at the marsh pond where he floated around and fed for a short time.
Here, he water skied in for a landing, where he immediately started fishing as soon as he hit the water!

I like that too but I’m just happy that this guy took flight so I could get some shots. Prior to that he was just floating around and being lazy.

I have watched waterskiers on Windermere in our Lake District, here in the UK, that weren’t as graceful as him!

These white pelicans are so much more graceful then the brown pelicans who hit the water like they were just tossed out of a moving vehicle.

Pelicans are one of my favorite birds. I can watch them fish for hours.

Yes they really are enjoyable to watch. You can have a nice day on the beach watching pelicans do their thing.

Agreed. Once in the Florida Keys I watched them for hours as they flew up into the air and dove back into the water. I think there was six or eight of them that acted in unison. It was very cool.

I have heard that the fishing technique of the brown pelican shortens their life span. That constant diving and pounding of the water from above hurts their eyes and damages their heads over time. The white pelicans fish in an entirely different manner which is much less stressful on the body.

What a landing. Then suddenly all quiet, folded up, and down to work. Loved the extended feathers in flight!

They have these really gigantic wings and are so much larger then most any other bird out there. Gotta love the white pelicans!
