It’s All In The Technique
This juvenile tricolored heron that was fishing in the salt marsh yesterday afternoon has the whole deal down perfectly.
Step one is to stalk your prey (in this case a tiny minnow).
Step two is to angle your body and neck down low to the water and get in the proper position to strike.
The final successful result is a tasty little fish!
This youngster has all the tools he will need to grow up to be a skilled adult Tri. 🙂
Nice! It always amazes me how intent they are on their fishing expeditions, yet how tiny the reward is!
These birds in particular seem to be perfectly content to dine on tiny fish exclusively.
Even the snowys will occasionally grab a nice size fish but I rarely see a tri with anything but a minnow or small shrimp. But the Tris are very skilled at what they do.
His mother taught him well! Isn’t he gorgeous?!
Yes she did and the little guy looks so proud of his achievement!
He made me chuckle, the little guy. I think the young ‘uns are so cute when they are starting out.
I also especially like the youngsters. Right now we have juvenile red headed wood peckers at our back yard feeder and they are funny with their grey rather than red heads. 🙂
