Can I Get A Little Help?

Spoonbill…Coming and Going Yesterday

A day in the life of a Roseate Spoonbill…

The Spoonbill starts off it’s day with an early morning landing in the marsh pond for some active feeding.

Later…it drops in for an evening visit to the salt marsh at low tide for more feeding, until finally wrapping up it’s day with a takeoff from the salt water.

Fresh Shrimp For Dinner

Well actually for breakfast. An anhinga had plucked a nice little appetizer out of the marsh pond for himself yesterday morning.

You might notice however that the poor unfortunate anhinga has some type of unknown fiber wrapped around the lower portion of it’s bill. We have seen the bird try to scrape it against a wood post in an attempt to remove the substance, but so far no luck. It is obviously still able to fish and eat which is good news.

Stop Picking On Me!

Yesterday evening just prior to sunset, we were watching a small group of Roseate Spoonbills feeding in the marsh pond.

At one point they came upon a baby alligator. The little guy could not have been much more then three feet long. Well the spoonbills became fascinated with the gator, especially it’s tail. The spoonbills appeared to be reacting to the alligator almost the way a cat would to a dangled piece of string. Once the spoonies found the little alligator with the curious tail they would not leave it alone, even grabbing the gator’s tail and picking it up a few times. The alligator attempted to go about it’s business which was getting itself fed, but was also clearly annoyed at the unwanted attention. Finally the spoonbills lost interest and the alligator glided off to a less crowded area to continue feeding.

You Had To Figure This Wasn’t Going To End Well

When I saw this big boy coming in he just had the look of a trouble maker all over his face.

He apeared to be up to no good and that turned out to be exactly the case.

He glided up slowly and silently to another alligator that was just relaxing and minding it’s own business.

But the relaxed gator realized soon enough that his peace would be interupted by mayhem from behind.

The trouble maker inched up just close enough then lunged out and chased the other one away from it’s resting spot.

Seeing Eye To Eye

Bath Time for Snowy

I don’t normally see wading birds like this snowy egret splashing around bathing the way you would a backyard type bird in a bird bath.

So it was entertaining and amusing to see the snowy drenching itself in the shallow water of the marsh pond.

Snowy Egret Flight

Not much going on this morning. The spoonbills would not cooperate and come in close, the osprey did not come up with a fish, the alligators didn’t feel like tangling with each other, and the skimmers quit way too soon.

So about all I have to show for my morning is a snowy egret flight. Oh well!
