Quiet Day
I stopped by the salt marsh only briefly yesterday afternoon. It was cold and windy and most of the birds were taking it easy, possibly conserving energy.
The incoming tide did not seem to be bringing many fish in with it anyway, so as a result I saw many birds who appeared to be in a resting mode rather then actively fishing.
I thought the photos with a great egret and a snowy, and then a great blue heron with a snowy, were interesting as they show the size differences between these birds.
It is supposed to warm up here for the coming weekend so I’m sure the action will pick up as the temps rise.

The size difference is interesting. They were probably all recovering after watching you get all excited about the eagle!

What is funny is that I can see a group of some of the smaller waders like the snowys and ibis (and this certainly applies to the ducks) all feeding and going about their business when suddenly they all scatter in fifty different directions at once. I look up and sure enough, there’s an eagle. I think the eagles do this just for laughs and to be purposely annoying because they can.

So peacefully pretty! That kind of soft quiet always brings out the poet in me… Not sure why, but it does.

Their lazy behavior yesterday has put me in a lazy mood today. I have tons more action stuff I could post but just went with this for today.

I love the light in these Phil. I really hadn’t realised just how big the great blue heron is compared to the other birds.

Thanks much I’m glad you enjoyed these.
Yes the GBH is a good size bird. I have seen them stand up to bald eagles. They are actually bigger then an eagle but the eagle usually still wins any battle over fish ownership.

Really like the intense gaze of the bird in the first shot. Is that a Great Egret?

Thanks much David. The first one is a great blue heron, the second shot is a great egret with a snowy egret, and the bottom shot is again a GBH with a snowy.

That first photo is really stunning, Phil. Interesting to compare the sizes. It’s easy to see why some of them are called ‘Great’.
