A Clean Lunch Is A Tasty Lunch
On Wednesday we were watching this great blue heron fishing in the salt marsh at low tide. He struck at the water and pulled out a nice size fish for his meal.
But he must’ve decided that the fish he came up with had a little too much mud on it so the heron plunged it back into the water, gave it a good rinse, then happily emerged with a nice clean fish!
Awesome photo’s Phil, as usual.
Thanks Jan, appreciate it.
Wonderful again – felt like I was there. Just curious how close these birds generally let you get while still carrying on with fishing and cleaning rituals?
Thanks I’m glad you like them.
I can often get quite close. Yesterday afternoon for instance there was a great blue heron fishing right next to me and it ignored me the entire time. At one point a brown pelican splashed in next to it and joined him.
I did not even bother trying to get pics, they were both too close and I did not have a shorter lens with me.
Beautiful action and lighting, Phil!
Thanks very much Kate!
Animal antics always make me smile. Your photos are beautifully done!
Thank you Molly, and yes we really get a smile out of watching these guys too! 🙂
Un pranzetto prelibato, foto che in maniera fantastica ne colgono momento dopo momento

Great sequence of the G. Blue in its fishing habits.

Love it. I know how hard it is to get these images. You are incredible.
I truly appreciate your very kind comments. 🙂 Thanks
Can’t be too fussy about food hygiene. 🙂 Great photos again, Phil.
Don’t want the Board of Health coming down on you that’s for sure.
Thanks much Sylvia!
Fabulous one!!!
Thanks very much!
Fastidious little GBH. I thought I saw one of his relatives today, but couldn’t get close enough for any reasonable shot. Perhaps I need to get me some wellies and slog out there with the guys digging for oysters.
Could be a relative, they have family all over. Thanks for looking and commenting Gunta!
Impresionante reportaje Phill!, besos
Gracias Me alegra que te gusta las fotos 🙂

He looks as though he quite enjoyed it 🙂
I believe he most certainly did! 🙂
It looks like you need a lot of patience for taking these great shots! Wonderful!
I do spend some time out there and sometimes not much happens but so it goes in nature.
But I also enjoy it so that’s 90% of the battle right there! 🙂
Thanks for checking out these pics!
Nothing like fresh clean sushi! Fantastic moment that you’ve captured Phil.
Does not get any fresher right?! 😀 This guy had the technique down!
Are you sure these photos are real! ???
Oh yeah 100% real! These guys are out there almost every day working for a living and I try to get out as much as possible to document it. 😀
Your photos are so awesome.. and yes they are working for a living.. kind of puts it all in perspective.
Yum!
Yum is right! 🙂
So beautiful. I love how at low tide the salt marsh looks like it is in bloom with all the oysters(?) scattered around.
Very painterly.
Thank you very much!
Yes those are oyster beds visible in the salt marsh during low tide. 🙂
You do the best job with the action shots. I love the wing positions and the frozen droplets when the heron springs into action!! Your place is always a treat for me!!
I appreciate your kind comments Judy and I’m happy you enjoy visiting here!
