A Clean Lunch Is A Tasty Lunch

On Wednesday we were watching this great blue heron fishing in the salt marsh at low tide. He struck at the water and pulled out a nice size fish for his meal.

But he must’ve  decided that the fish he came up with had a little too much mud on it so the heron plunged it back into the water, gave it a good rinse, then happily emerged with a nice clean fish!

    • Thanks I’m glad you like them.
I can often get quite close. Yesterday afternoon for instance there was a great blue heron fishing right next to me and it ignored me the entire time. At one point a brown pelican splashed in next to it and joined him.
I did not even bother trying to get pics, they were both too close and I did not have a shorter lens with me.

  1. Fastidious little GBH. I thought I saw one of his relatives today, but couldn’t get close enough for any reasonable shot. Perhaps I need to get me some wellies and slog out there with the guys digging for oysters.

  2. I felt myself as if there with you… These are amazing and beautiful photographs… Do you know what I thought, you should make them a photographical wild life book… maybe you have. This is great collection. As always fascinated me dear Phil, Thank you, have a nice weekend, love, nia

    • I do spend some time out there and sometimes not much happens but so it goes in nature.
But I also enjoy it so that’s 90% of the battle right there! 🙂
Thanks for checking out these pics!

  3. You do the best job with the action shots. I love the wing positions and the frozen droplets when the heron springs into action!! Your place is always a treat for me!!
