Just When You Thought He Was A Changed Bird…
After seeing our resident pink bad boy having a humbling encounter with an alligator a few days ago, we thought that experience would likely turn his life around and stop some of the aggressive behavior. But oh no, not this grumpy spoonbill! He was right back at it in the salt marsh, once again biting the tail of another spoonie that was feeding quietly and minding it’s own business. And he wouldn’t stop either, he chased the other poor spoonbill completely out of the area. yapping at him the entire time!

Wonderful shots Phil.

Fabulous shots, as always Phil! I love to watch Spoonbills. And their beautiful pink feathers make for awesome reflections that you manage to capture perfectly! Blessings, Robyn

What a sequence! I guess there are bullies in the bird kingdom, too.

Birds bullies, alligator bullies, yup we got both. Funny that it’s most often displayed within the species. It’s usually snowy vs. snowy, spoonbill vs. spoonbill etc.
Thanks Deb!

Rabblerouser! Fun shots. (Almost typo’d and put an I where the o was in shots. Oops!)

Well I think it’s likely the spoonbill that was chased off might have called the aggressor a little pink sh*t. 🙂

It’s days like this I’m glad I’m not a spoonie in your marsh. Your really caught all the action. Nice!

I was glad I was there to catch this because I went over today and there was nothing going on and I mean nothing.
No birds, no alligators, nothing, zip, zero. 😦

And here I thot that never happened to you …

Very rare. And I take it personally. I hold the wildlife responsible for disappointing me.

I think you need a spoonie wise guy or two to take this guy down a notch. Apparently interspecies lessons don’t work. Great action captures, Phil.

Maybe I should send Moose and Rocco ( the spoonbill muscle) over to have a little ‘talk’ with Mr. Grumpy Pants.
Thanks for checking these out Steve and glad you like them.

My goodness, the pink bad boy is so aggressive! I’m not surprised when the flies out soon – but not willingly! 😛

Wonderful post again. Just curious – how large is your marsh, in acres? It holds a cast of thousands, it seems at times!

Thanks a million for checking these out and so glad you like them!
Well the whole area including the ponds, salt marsh, beach and swamp are approx. 2500 acres so it’s a large area. There is close viewing access for only small parts of it so we are fortunate when birds and other wildlife cooperate and visit the nearby sections.

You’re welcome, and thanks again for sharing them with us all. That’s a nice large marsh, and its fabulous that they include any sort of viewing area at all, and that the birds visit often. And all are fortunate that Mr. A. has such a genial personality.

The last photo is a classic, really tells the story. Bird just doesn’t change his feathers does he? We might see him like in the last photo with a gator wide-mouthed on his tail.

If I ever got a shot like that last one where in addition to the two birds there was also an alligator behind them with a wide open mouth I believe I could safely retire from wildlife photography because that should do it I would think. 🙂

Looks like ole grumpy needs another more thorough attitude adjustment. But nice that he provided some good shots for you!

I strongly suspect he has no plans at all to adjust his attitude. Once a grump, always a grump. 🙂

What a bully. I think he needs someone to read the riot act to him. The photos are just perfect.

Well I thought the encounter with the alligator might have caused him to dial back on the attitude a bit but clearly that is not the case. Although…I did see him getting along fine with some snowys and ibis so perhaps there is hope.

The biggest birds we had around lately were the white pelicans and spoonie seemed to get along OK with them but probably because he had too. 🙂
