Black Skimmer At Work
This afternoon we had a young black skimmer hit the salt marsh for a few quick passes.
He grabbed a few fish, buzzed a confused yellowlegs, and in general had a nice cruise through the area before heading off deeper out into the marsh.

Wonderful! I just love skimmers. Their bills are so strange.
What I have never been able to figure out is how they avoid smashing that long bill into an oyster bed just beneath the surface. Especially with how fast they fly.

I wish I was sometimes. I try to request they move or fly a certain way and they usually ignore me. They don’t take direction as well as you might think. 🙂
There has to be a way to work in cooperation. I’ll think about it.

A yellowlegs is a small shore bird shown in fourth pic down. They have yellow legs. Who was the creative genius that came up with that name?!
