He’s At It Again

Once again an anhinga is caught playing with his food out in the marsh this afternoon.

Naturally, for an anhinga, flipping a fish off your sharp bill and flinging it into the air to catch it on the way down is how they feed. But they are not required to make it look like so much fun. Well… not much fun for the fish of course…

  1. Very cool:) I noticed it seems like the birds body is submerged? That seems unusual compared to what I see with the local birdies.

    • Anhingas are water birds and fish by swimming completely under water like a super fast submarine. They spear a fish with their sharp bill and only their neck and head surfaces to eat the speared fish while their body remains mostly still under water. In order to get the fish off their bill they shake and flip it by tossing it up and then catching it on the way down out of mid air.
These birds are amazing to watch and one of my all time favorite bird actions to photograph.
