He’s At It Again
Once again an anhinga is caught playing with his food out in the marsh this afternoon.
Naturally, for an anhinga, flipping a fish off your sharp bill and flinging it into the air to catch it on the way down is how they feed. But they are not required to make it look like so much fun. Well… not much fun for the fish of course…

WAS THIS HOW SOMEBODY GOT THE IDEA FOR FLIPPING PANCAKES?

Yup, that’s what they do and they do it well.

Oh, what a way to go, down the hatch. I think if one is going to be eaten, being skewered is a tough way to go. Very nice captures, Phil.

This is the double whammy, skewered then swallowed down while still alive. Yikes!

Love that flipping shot! Also like how you can see his body all spread out under the water.

Very cool:) I noticed it seems like the birds body is submerged? That seems unusual compared to what I see with the local birdies.

Anhingas are water birds and fish by swimming completely under water like a super fast submarine. They spear a fish with their sharp bill and only their neck and head surfaces to eat the speared fish while their body remains mostly still under water. In order to get the fish off their bill they shake and flip it by tossing it up and then catching it on the way down out of mid air.
These birds are amazing to watch and one of my all time favorite bird actions to photograph.

The anhingas and the skimmers are probably the most fun to watch in action. Hope you enjoy your weekend!

Noting the comments, I was trying to concentrate on the submerged part of the anhinga ………! Unusual.

Outstanding captures, Phil! I suppose you couldn’t help showing the poor fish’s eye this time. 😦 I forgive you though.

Ha ha, as soon as my wife saw this was going to be my post, she said… Uh oh, Sylvia is not going to like seeing another poor little fishie face. 😮 😀

Heh heh, no it’s not that, it’s just that we know you sometimes feel badly for our poor little friends in the sea.
