Tricolored Heron

This afternoon we had a couple of tricolored herons come flying into the salt marsh where they spent their time fishing for tiny minnows.

I always enjoy seeing these colorful and active birds as they endlessly dart about the area in search of a meal.

  Oh I know! We had about ten pelicans out there as well and they were banging around and splashing so much the whole thing sounded like the local community pool. ☺

  Thanks Donna, we had three out there yesterday which was nice but even though they sort of hung around together they still snapped and squawked at each other. Funny birds. 😃

They are like tiny, more delicate version of the Great Blue. We don’t see many (any?) around here either.

  They are like smaller great blues and people here often mistake them for that. Soon, some of these guys will be in breeding colors and get a bright royal blue bill.
