I previously worked as a news and sports photographer. Recently I have been enjoying wildlife photography. My approach toward bird photos is similar to sports photography. I attempt to capture mostly action and hopefully a unique perspective.
A great egret looks elegant as it jumps off from the marsh pond on a recent afternoon.
As often as I see these birds I tend to forget how graceful those huge white wings can look.
Brown Pelican backlit and silhouetted by late day sun on a recent late afternoon in the marsh. Despite the day winding down, he was still out there fishing trying to come up with a meal before heading off for the night.
On a recent late evening in the salt marsh it was obvious these two egrets had some sort of issue with each other. When one came in to land the other put up his wings defiantly, and gave a seriously unwelcoming look. The arriving intruder got the message loud and clear as he never did land. In fact, I don’t know how he managed to stay airborne throughout the entire incident which went on for several intense seconds.
We had some unusual late afternoon fog come rolling into the marsh area today and it was still present as the sun started going down…
Yesterday afternoon I was watching this GBH sunning himself along the edge of the marsh when he abruptly decided to jump off and head out across the water. I guess wanted to go join his friends that were fishing over at the far end. Or… he saw some other heron he didn’t like and felt compelled to chase it off. Either case is entirely possible. 🙂
A snowy egret doing a little feather maintenance in the marsh pond recently. Never hurts to lift the lid, uh I mean the wing, and take a quick look around to make sure everything is in order.
Just a few flight shots from this weekend…
A great egret on Friday, a brown pelican on Saturday, and a great blue heron today. 🙂
As you can see from this recent photo, bald eagles are not only good flyers, they are also excellent jumpers.
Here the eagle wants to go up a few branches in the pine tree and takes advantage of not just those big wings, but it’s powerful legs as well.
Must be nice to be king of the skies!
